The Wonder Boys basketball team went toe to toe with Southeastern Oklahoma on Thursday, Feb. 1. Both teams are at the top of men’s basketball teams in the Great American Conference. It was a hard-fought game by both sides but in the end, Southeastern would slip away with the victory.
The Wonder Boys were 10-2 in the GAC, one win ahead of the Savage Storm. ATU had won against the Savage Storm previously in January, although it was clear that the Storm were itching for revenge.
The teams went back and forth with the lead with numerous cases of tied scores. The final score was 70-66 in Oklahoma’s favor. The score remained tied 12 times and the lea
d changed 10 times.
With an unfortunate number of turnovers (16 from ATU and 9 from Southeastern) and steals (2 from ATU and 9 from Southeastern), the extra points needed for the Wonder Boys were just out of reach.
#11, Cassius Brooks, a junior from Chicago, brought home a whopping 30 percent of the points, scoring 20 out of the 66 total. #15, Tommy Kamarad, a junior from
Buford, followed as close-second with 19 points. The pair scored over half of the points for the Wonder Boys.
The first quarter ended with a tie of 30-30. The teams were scoring back to back, taking the lead, and tying it up constantly.
The second quarter began with Southeastern taking the lead. Once again, the teams took turns tying the score and taking the lead. With 15 minutes left, ATU had the lead. Numerous fouls allowed Southeastern to make constant free throws. The Wonder Boys made 10 of their 15 free throws,
about 67 percent, while the Savage Storm made 20 of their 29, 69 percent. Southeastern took the lead in the last three minutes of the game and held it until the final buzzer.
With Southeastern’s win against ATU, they are now tied in the Great American Conference. The boys
will have to work to gain back their lead. Cassius Brooks, #11 pictured. This was the picture on the Feb. 1 recap of the game by Daniel Gallegos,
