The Wonder Boys basketball season kicked off with it’s fair share of up and down moments. Currently the team is 6-11 overall and 3-8 in the Great American Conference, and is currently tenth in the standings.
“After the Christmas break, we came back and were slammed with COVID trouble,” Mark Downey, head coach, said. “We had key players missing and practicing with only six players at one point. We had to reinvent ourselves completely.”
Players have stepped up in leadership and skills with the team reinventing themselves. “Tony Hall has been doing well. He was one of the few players out for games, and he came back and has been leading by example. Calvin Allen did not play much before, and he has been spectacular getting thrown into this role-playing 35 minutes in a game. Our two big guys, Niko Gosnell and Kevin Howard, were a combined 15 for 20 from the floor against East Central. They have been above all else stepping up during this time,” Downey said.
The team is working on wrapping up the season strong, and put on a solid performance in the GAC tournament on March 3-6 in Shawnee OK.
“These guys have been working hard and they are putting a lot of work into the season. We are going to keep fighting,” Downey said.
The next home game will be in Tucker Coliseum Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. against the Harding Bisons.
