Tech’s Public Safety continues annual donation drive
Tech’s Department of Public Safety is conducting a Toys for Tots drive during the 2021 holiday season. The drive began on Nov. 4 and will continue through Dec. 8.
The Marine Corps Toys for Tots is a charity dedicated to collect and distribute new toys to less fortunate children during the holiday season. PSAFE has been aiding the cause since before 2012, according to Joshua McMillian, the chief of public safety.
“We are one of the largest collectors of Toys for Tots for the city,” McMillian said. “It makes us feel good about the work we do with them. We know all those toys go to children; 100 percent of the gifts go to children in need.”
“Our main goal is to raise awareness [for children in need] during the holiday season. Our goal is to fill up that box as many times as possible and get as many toys as possible to people who need them,” McMillian said.
PSAFE does not take money, although those wanting to donate money to the cause can do so through the official Toys for Tots website.
PSAFE also hosts other charitable drives during the year, such as Shop with a Cop and Food for Fines, where students bring in canned food to pay off tickets. They also assist with countless other events, aiding in traffic control for races and campus walks, such as the Russellville half marathon and Health and Wellness’ Out of the Darkness walk.
Those wishing to donate new, unopened toys can do so at Tech’s Department of Public Safety headquarters, located at 716 N. El Paso Ave, from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.
