Kali Uchis is a Colombian pop star raised in California. Her debut album Por Vida set her on the path to the world of underground artists. Her first performance was on the “Kinda Neat” podcast; this exposure to musical culture prompted other artists of higher status, such as Tyler, the Creator to provide her a platform for performance. Their hit song “See You Again” helped Uchis gain recognition all around the world.
Her second album Isolation, gained praise from Rolling Stone Magazine as an exciting album that proves Kali Uchis’ talent. Uchis then entered mainstream fame by performing as an opener for influential artist Lana Del Rey in 2017. Throughout the years, Uchis has remained consistent by releasing Sin Miedo Del Amor Y Otros Demonios, Red Moon in Venus, and her latest release Orquideas.
Uchis’ intention for her music is to be able to showcase Latin American culture and bring a sort of healing aspect to fans all around. With the help of Orquideas, she is able to embrace and represent bicultural exploration. Uchis adds a unique and fresh Latin sound to the American music industry, allowing for Latin representation in an industry that is not predominantly Latin.
With these songs, Kali Uchis is also able to push the boundaries of how Latinas are viewed in the media. The name of the album translates to orchids, symbolizing luxury, self-love, beauty, and strength. This allows for the stereotypes of Latinas as being loud, hot-tempered, or volatile to be broken down and offers the idea that there is more to Latin women than the idealized version the male gaze has promoted through the decades and permits teenage girls to step into a more comfortable and delicate sense of identity.
