Arkansas Tech University is offering an exciting, immersive learning opportunity in Washington, D.C. for students in May 2024. In partnership with The Washington Center, the Arkansas General Assembly has graciously funded up to eight ATU undergraduate or graduate students, all who must be Arkansas residents, to attend their National Security Seminar from May 14- May 22.
The funding covers the $2295 seminar fee, which includes housing, and provides a $300 stipend for travel and food. The Washington Center also waives the $60 application fee for ATU students. Dr. Michael Rogers holds the waiver code for interested students. Any additional expenses will be each student’s responsibility.
Students can also earn one credit hour at ATU for completing the seminar (see your advisor or Dr. Rogers to create the one-credit intern opportunity at ATU). The application deadline is March 27, 2024.
Dr. Christopher Housenick will be joining the ATU students in Washington, D.C., overseeing the seminar and coursework. Each ATU student application must have Dr. Rogers’ approval, so students who are interested or have additional questions are encouraged to get in contact with him.
Additionally, if the May 2024 seminar does not work in your schedule, there will be future opportunities as The Washington Center runs week-long seminars every Jan. and May, as well as full semester seminars in the fall, spring and summer. For more information on this opportunity, contact Dr. Christopher Housenick at chousenick@atu.edu or Dr. Michael Rogers at mrogers6@atu.edu.
La Source private school, in Meudon, France, is offering room and board at no cost through a family homestay program sponsored by parents who have children in the school. In exchange, six selected ATU students and Mr. Philippe Y. Van Houtte, an instructor of French and a librarian at ATU, will assist in teaching English at the school for four hours per day from March 18 to March 22. With the remaining trip time, Mr. Van Houtte and the selected students will visit many famous French sites, including, but not limited to: Paris, Versailles, the National Observatory of France, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Seine river. In addition to sightseeing, students will get a taste of the local French culture and cuisine.
The program also offers three ATU credit hours for French 3113—French Civilization and Culture—with the completion of some activities before and after the study abroad experience.
Selected students and Mr. Van Houtte will depart from Little Rock on Thursday, March 14, and return to Little Rock on Monday, March 25. Students will miss three days of class instruction and should communicate this to their instructors.
In order to participate in the program students must have a 3.0 GPA, and complete a short interview process with Mr. Van Houtte. The estimated cost of the trip is $2500, not including personal spending money, however, participants are encouraged to apply for the ATU Study Abroad scholarship which can amount to more than $1000 per participant. After the short interview with Mr. Van Houtte, students will be directed to the Study Abroad Office for the scholarship application.
Students interested in participating in this exciting learning opportunity should feel free to contact Mr. Philippe Y. Van Houtte at pvanhoutte@atu.edu for any additional information.
