Arkansas Tech sophomore right-hander Emiliano Mata has been named as the latest Great American Conference Pitcher of the Week as the league announced its weekly honors on Monday.
The weekly conference award is the first for Mata individually and the third for a Wonder Boys pitcher, joining John Gray and Gerald Pintarich.
A native of Douglas, Ariz., Mata turned in his best outing of the year this past weekend against Arkansas-Monticello. In the start, Mata registered a season-high 11 strikeouts. He also allowed just one run on two hits in 6.0 innings of work against the potent Boll Weevils’ lineup.
While not quite going the distance in the seven-inning game of the series, Mata’s masterful six innings of work kept the Wonder Boys in the game and allowed for them to make a seventh inning rally that resulted in the team’s lone win of the weekend at UAM.
