During the week of spring break 17 ATU business students got to spend some time in New York City experiencing Wall Street and catching a glimpse of what the business world is like in a large city. The trip was offered to junior and senior business students who have completed 60 hours of classes.
Although the training floor on Wall Street was closed, students still made the most of their trip by visiting PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, which is one of the four largest global accounting firms alongside Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and Klynveld Peat Marwick Goerdeler.
Students toured the PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP office and got the chance to see its facilities and learn a little bit about how businesses operate in Manhattan. Senior Instructor of Accounting Tracy Johnston, one of the chaperones on the trip, said that the experience was fascinating, and all students enjoyed it, not solely the accounting majors.
“We just kind of got to experience what fast-paced life is like there and open up their eyes to the fact that we’re in Arkansas. But there is a lot more out there in the world,” said Johnston.
One of the students in attendance, Caleb Chance, a business major from Dover, said he would describe his experience in New York as learning how to adapt to surrounding situations.
“Through the 60 miles of walking, tours, boat rides, museums and ear-popping elevators I would say we had an adventure. We had taken a wrong subway or two, but it was about having fun doing it. If we were late to an activity, we would start planning the next one. It was about having fun while we were in New York and making the most of it wherever we were.”
While in New York students also went to the Empire State Building, the 911 Memorial, and earned three credit hours along the way. The School of Business has taken students on the Wall Street Experience trip for several years now and will most likely continue that tradition in the future.
There is also an upcoming trip to Germany for business students in May 2024. Students who applied will spend some time at ATU’s partner school, Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen, learning about the business world and connecting with students at THM.
