The Great American Conference’s (GAC) top eight teams will be vying for the GAC Tournament Championship this weekend at Bank of the Ozarks Arena in Hot Springs. Play will begin Thursday, and No. 1 Tech will compete at 5 p.m. against No. 8 Southwestern Oklahoma.
The ordering of the top eight teams are Arkansas Tech, Southern Nazarene, Southeastern Oklahoma State, Harding, Northwestern Oklahoma State, Ouachita Baptist, Southern Arkansas, Arkansas-Monticello and Southwestern Oklahoma State. The two teams that did not make the tournament are East Central and Henderson State.
The Golden Suns are going into the tournament with a 15-1 conference record, the GAC regular-season title and an 18-game winning streak.
However, the tournament could prove tough for the Golden Suns. In recent history, Tech and Harding have been matched up for the finals of the tournament. However, this year Harding is seeded fourth, so Tech could potentially see Harding in the semi-finals.
The Golden Suns have been preparing for the tournament since they claimed the regular season title. Each practice is important for the Golden Suns to get ready for the opponents they are going to face, head coach Kristy Bayer said.
“We put ourselves in a good situation by getting the first seed in the tournament. We are going to focus on one opponent at a time, and hopefully we will repeat another Great American Conference championship.”
If the Golden Suns advance to the second round, they will play at 6 p.m. on Friday. If Tech advances, the next matchup is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, which will be the championship match.
All of the games are going to be covered live by the GAC Sports Network through an online webcast at gacsportsnetwork.com. Tickets are $6 per day and $3 for students.
