The Golden Suns tennis team picked up a 7-0 road win against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Tuesday. Tech (1-1) won two matches by default by the Golden Lions (0-5), while dominating the court with multiple 6-0 sets.
In singles play, Olga Leyshyna, Laura Sanchez and Vandella Suico won each set they played 6-0, and Camila Roca won by default. In No. 1 singles, Tamara Bell defeated Elizabeth Perez 6-4, 7-5. Bohdana Sardak also challenged her opponent Monico Arcos to a 6-3, 6-4 match.
In doubles play, the team of Sardak and Leyshyna closely defeated the team of Arcos and Perez 7-5. Bell and Roca defeated their opponents 6-0, and Sanchez and Suico won by default.
Tech was defeated in its first competition of the season 8-1 to the Northeastern State RiverHawks on Saturday in Fort Smith.
The No. 20 RiverHawks (2-0) used four of their top 20 players in the Central Region to win the match against the Golden Suns.
The lone Golden Sun to earn a win was Suico, who defeated Lucia Cerchlanova 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (10-5) in No. 6 singles.
Tech’s Sardak came close to a win after battling Patricia Husakova in No. 2 singles. Husakova defeated Sardak 6-2, 7-6 (7-1).
In singles play, Kristina Savchenkov defeated Bell 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Molly Worden defeated Leyshyna 6-4, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Daria Panferova defeated Sanchez 6-0, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Barbora Jirickova defeated Roca 6-2, 6-3 in No. 5 singles.
In doubles play, the team of Sardak and Leyshyna was defeated 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. Bell and Roca were defeated 8-3 in No. 2 doubles, and Sanchez and Suico were defeated 8-4 in No. 3 doubles.
The Golden Suns were picked to finish second in the Great American Conference (GAC) by the conference coaches’ preseason poll in late January.
Tech finished second in the regular season but earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where it defeated regular-season and tournament champions Harding.
Seniors Sardak and Leyshyna and sophomore Tamara Bell earned all-GAC honors this past season.
Sardak and Leyshyna each earned top 20 rankings by the ITA Central Region, as Leyshyna was ranked No. 14, and Sardak was ranked no. 18.
The Golden Suns will face Hendrix on Wednesday in Conway before traveling to Texarkana to face LSU-Shreveport and Texas A&M-Texarkana Feb. 21.
