The Golden Suns volleyball team had their game winning streak snapped at five after losing a five-set thriller against Southwestern Oklahoma State in Weatherford, Oklahoma Saturday afternoon.
This match was like a heavyweight championship fight. The Bulldogs threw the first punch taking set one, winning 25-22. No team had more than 3-point lead in this set.
The Golden Suns answered back, winning set two 25-22. SWOSU wasn’t going to back down and came back and won set three 25-17. The Suns won set four in a back and forth affair 27-25.
In the fifth and final set, the Golden Suns jumped out to a 5-3 lead. Then the Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run to make the score 11-7. The Golden Suns tried to fend off the Bulldogs’ rally but came up short and lost the set 15-11 and lost the match three sets to two.
In this match Russellville native Hunter Eshnaur had a match and career-high of 24 kills in the match.
Allie Anderson, of Bryant, and Tabitha Spray, of Denton, Texas, had 13 kills each in this five-set thriller.
There were also some great defensive performances by Russellville native Meredith Darnell who had a match-high 29 digs, Brittany Melcher, of McKinney, Texas, had 15 digs and Emily Acker, of Denton, Texas, had 14 digs in this matchup.
The Golden Suns drop to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in GAC play.
The Suns return home to Tucker Coliseum tomorrow when they play a two-game home stretch to take on Oklahoma Baptist and Southern Nazarene.
