SUNS OPEN UP GAC PLAY TUESDAY

DESTINEY CARROCCIO/THE ARKA TECH For the first time ever, the Golden Suns have broken into the NCAA DII Top 25 rankings, at 24th.

The Golden Suns went into Tuesday’s home opener against the Southern Arkansas Lady Muleriders at a record of 3-3.

The Suns lost a pair of heartbreakers to two nationally ranked teams: No. 22 University of Central Missouri and No. 11 Palm Beach Atlantic.

The Golden Suns and the Lady Muleriders played twice last year and the Golden Suns won both meetings by a score of 3 sets to 0. Russellville native Hunter Eshnaur leads the Golden Suns’ offensive charge with 60 kills and a .100 hitting percentage. Libero and Defensive specialist Meredith Darnell, from Russellville, leads the defense in 107 digs, second on the team in that category behind Eshnaur.

Darnell is trying to fill the shoes of former Suns standout Madison Nagel who started for the Golden Suns at the Libero position the last four years. Also, it was Suns’ new head coach Kera Dukic first ever Great American Conference game as a head coach.

The Golden Suns will travel to Oklahoma tomorrow to compete in the crossover classic, first serve is tomorrow at 10 a.m. against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats.
