Showstoppers, Team Blue win flag football

AMY FAIRBANKS/THE ARKA TECH: The Showstoppers won the women’s intramural flag football championship on Oct. 16 at Thone Stadium and will advance to regionals at Oklahoma State University later this month.

The Arkansas Tech University intramural flag football finals took place Oct. 16 at Buerkle Field Thone Stadium. The women’s flag football champion is the Showstoppers. The men’s flag football champion is Team Blue.

After a champion is crowned for the flag football season, the team has the option of going to a regional tournament. This year’s tournament locations are Western Kentucky University, Oklahoma

State University and Texas A&M University.

Tech pays for the entry fee for the regional tournament of the team’s choice. These entry fees range from $275 to $350.

The Showstoppers have won two years in a row and three times total at Tech. Last year the team attended regionals in Fayetteville and placed third. This year the team plans on attending the Oklahoma State University tournament Oct. 31 through Nov. 2.

Meleah Reames, a junior rehabilitation science major, plays center for the Showstoppers.

“I always have fun playing the game, and the friendships I have formed from playing have been a blessing in my life,” said Reames.

Team Blue is still undecided on which regional tournament location it will be attending.

Lashard Bullard, a junior health and wellness major, is a wide receiver for Team Blue. To Bullard, flag football is a game where he and his friends can relive the old childhood days.

“It allows you to be free, have fun and try and be like your favorite superstar,” Bullard said. “It can build new found friendships and make old ones stronger.”
