Golden Suns sweep two in conference, win 9 straight

The Golden Suns volleyball team raised $850 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and swept Southern Arkansas University 3-0 during jersey benefit night on Oct. 9.

The Golden Suns (16-5, 8-1 Great American Conference) swept the Lady Muleriders (8-13, 5-4 GAC) to gain another conference win with sets of 25-13, 25-20, 25-18.

Key players were Katie Huff, who had a 14-kill performance and hit .370, and McCall Wilkins, who had a six-kill performance and recorded the top hitting percentage for the team with .385. Sierra Nighswonger dished out 36 assists and had three service aces.

Head coach Kristy Bayer said, “The girls were focused on both ends of the ball. Our middles did a great job putting the ball away.”

Other outstanding players for the night were Kaci Jackson, who had a nine-kill performance with 14 digs, and Emily Todd, who had an eight-kill performance with 10 digs. The Golden Suns outhit the Lady Muleriders .277 to .116, hitting a match-best .405.

The Golden Suns continued conference play on Tuesday at Henderson State University (3-17, 0-9 GAC), as they defeated the Lady Reddies 3-0. The Golden Suns have claimed their ninth straight win and sixth straight conference match with set scores of 25-22, 25-14, 25-18.

Key players for the evening were Todd, who had a 12-kill performance with eight digs and hit .391, and Madison Nagle, who had an 18-dig performance. Nighswonger dished out 34 assists and six digs.

Additional key players were Jackson, who added five kills, and Sara Stovall, who had two kills and hit .667. Tech outhit the Reddies .269 to .074, hitting a match-best .458 in the second set.

Tech is now focused on their next two road matches in Oklahoma this weekend. The first matchup is against Mid-American Christian in Oklahoma City at 7:30 p.m. On Friday the Golden Suns will continue conference play in Weatherford, Okla., against Southwestern Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
