Golden Suns score 18 in OT to keep streak alive

LAURA BEAN/THE ARKA TECH: Fatima Adams breaks through the defense for a layup at a recent game in Tucker Coliseum.

The No. 8 Arkansas Tech University Golden Suns extended their winning streak to six with a 84-72 win over East Central University Saturday at Tucker Coliseum.

However, it took a second-half comeback and 18-point overtime to keep Tech undefeated in conference play.

Tech (14-1, 9-0 Great American Conference) trailed the Tigers 31-28 at halftime and was down by six points with 1:25 remaining in the game. A jumper by leading-scorer Fatima Adams put Tech within four, and then a 3-pointer by Katrina Hayden cut the deficit to one with 34 seconds left.

East Central took a two-point lead by one free throw with 18 seconds remaining, but a foul by the Tigers gave Tech a chance to tie the game with four seconds left. Adams made both free throws to send the game to overtime at 66-66.

Five more minutes was all Tech needed to salvage a win, as the Golden Suns took the last lead change at 3:22 with a free throw by Caroline Eubanks. Tech outscored the Tigers 16-4 to finish with a win.

Adams finished with a 26-point, 22-rebound effort, followed by Fabiana Monte with 15 points. Pounds scored 14 points, and Hayden scored 11 points.

The Golden Suns shot nearly 52 percent from the field and less than 43 percent in 3-pointers but were 22-34 in free throws for the game.

Tech scored 30 points in the paint and 20 points off turnovers.

Tech will face No. 23 Harding University Thursday at Rhodes Fieldhouse.
