The Arkansas Tech Golden Suns golf team finished first place overall for the first time this fall season at the Golfweek Division II Fall Invitational at the Sunriver Resort on Sunday with an overall three-round shot total of 873, 11 strokes ahead of second place Dallas Baptist.
“They did what we talked about before the match,” Anderson said. “They drove the ball to the widest part of the fairway, hit good approach shots and played simple, boring golf — that’s what got us the win.”
After a first round score of 298 left Tech tied with Dallas Baptist, the Golden Suns finished round two improving by 8 strokes with a 290 shot total and wrapped up the final round 5 shots improved with a 285 total — the lowest round of the tournament among the 12-team field.
Senior Rebecka Surtevall earned a first place finish overall individually—her fourth top-five finish of the year — on the Meadow Course’s par 71, matching 2-under 69s in the first two rounds and a 3-under 68 on the final day to finish with a 206 stroke tally, 7 shots under both par and second place individual finisher Isabell Jimenez Perea of Tarleton State.
Senior Megan Jeffery tied for 9th individually with a 6-over 219 total on three rounds of play. Jeffery followed up an opening round 4-over 75 with consecutive scores of 1-over 72 in rounds two and three.
Sophomore Caroline Fredensborg improved by 11 strokes from round one to the final day, tying for 11th place overall with daily totals of 7-over 78, 4-over 75 and 4-under 67 to finish with a 7-over 220 total tally over 54 holes played.
Finishing tied for 28th individually, senior Taylor Kline posted scores of 5-over 76, 3-over 74 and 7-over 78 to end the tournament 15-over with 228 strokes.
Sophomore Jessica Sachs tied for 49th overall in the 61-player field, shooting 9-over 80, 7-over 78 and 12-over 83 on respective days, culminating in a 28-over 241 total.
“The girls played great golf and for the most part improved their scores for three consecutive rounds,” head coach Amy Anderson said.
The Golden Suns will wrap up their fall season at the Great American Conference Preview in Oklahoma City Oct. 13-14.
