The Golden Suns edged at 64-62 win against Southwestern Oklahoma State University after outscoring the Lady Bulldogs by two in overtime on Feb. 5 in Weatherford, Okla.
No. 25 Arkansas Tech (17-3, 12-2 Great American Conference) survived the conference matchup with a putback by Fatima Adams with two seconds remaining for the win. Southwestern Oklahoma finished the game with a 7-12, 4-9 GAC record.
The Golden Suns and Lady Bulldogs traded scores and leads in the first half until Tech gained its largest lead at 18-11 with a jumper from Katrina Hayden with 8:46 remaining.
The Lady Bulldogs beat into Tech’s lead until forcing a 22-22 tie by the 2:18 mark. Two missed jumpers, a foul and a turnover resulted in a 30-22 Southwestern Oklahoma lead by halftime.
Southwestern Oklahoma quickly extended its lead to 10 in the opening of the second half, and it was Tech who had to cut into the Lady Bulldogs’ lead to force a tie. By the 12:08 mark, Adams grabbed a defensive rebound and pushed the length of the court for a layup to tie the game at 41-41.
After three more ties, Tech extended its lead to seven with a layup by Caroline Eubanks. However, an onslaught of turnovers, fouls and missed shots allowed the Lady Bulldogs to tie the score with 19 seconds left to force overtime.
A steal and layup by Danielle Frachiseur eight seconds into overtime gave the Golden Suns a 58-56 lead, but a layup by the Lady Bulldogs tied the game with 4:23 remaining. Adams made one of two free throws to give Tech a 59-58 advantage, to which Frachiseur extended by three with a jumper at the two minute mark. A layup by the Lady Bulldogs cut Tech’s lead to 61-60, but Adams made one of two free throws to give Tech a two-point lead with 52 seconds to play.
Southwestern Oklahoma managed to tie the game at 62-62 with 28 seconds left with an offensive rebound and jumper.
A timeout by Tech resulted in a jumper by Adams, who missed the shot and managed to force another before time expired. Adams scored the game-winning basket with two seconds remaining for a Golden Suns road win.
Adams led Tech with 24 points, 16 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Frachiseur scored 13 points, and Anissa Pounds scored 10 points.
The Golden Suns will face Northwestern Oklahoma at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Tucker Coliseum.
