Golden Suns clinch share of GAC regular-season title

With the win against Arkansas-Monticello and an 85-73 win over Harding on Feb. 26, Tech (21-5, 16-4 GAC) gained a No. 2 seed in the GAC tournament and play Henderson State Thursday at 2:15 p.m. in Bartlesville, Okla.

Four Golden Suns put up double-digit points en route to a 77-60 win over the Cotton Blossoms (13-12, 11-9 GAC) at Steelman Field House. Fatima Adams scored 18, Katrina Hayden scored 17, Anissa Pounds scored 14 and Anna Lea Little scored 11 in the 17-point win.

Tech extended its early lead to 11 with less than six minutes remaining of the first half, but the Cotton Blossoms fought back from a 33-22 deficit, scoring six-unanswered points for a 33-28 halftime score.

The Golden Suns regained command of the momentum by the mid-second half. Caroline Eubanks made a layup for a 59-42 Tech advantage with 10:37 remaining. A 3-pointer by Pounds with 6:36 left extended Tech’s lead to 19, and another 3-pointer by Pounds extended it to 68-48 with 5:32 left. Jacinda Myers-Sanders gave the Golden Suns their larges lead at 23 with a jumper at the 4:18 mark.

The Golden Suns made 3-of-5 free throws compared to the Cotton Blossom’s 11-of-18. Tech grabbed 38 rebounds and made 10 3-pointers.

In Tech’s last home game of the season, on Feb. 26 it routed the Lady Bison 85-73. The Lady Bison (19-6, 15-4 GAC) defeated Tech 74-61 earlier this season at Rhodes Field House.

The team effort of Pounds, Adams, Myers-Sanders and Hayden in double digits compounded with a 19-of-23 free throw performance and 41 rebounds gave Tech the edge at Tucker Coliseum.

Tech and Harding traded leads early in the first half until a 3-pointer by Hayden gave Tech a 17-15 lead at the 13:42 mark. A fastbreak layup by Adams gave the Golden Suns its largest lead of the half at 41-29, as Tech went into halftime with a 41-31 lead.

Tech came out firing in the second half, quickly extending its lead to 15 with two free throws by Adams at the 18:15 mark.The Golden Suns maintained and added to its lead with a steal and layup by Hayden for a 56-39 lead at the 15:25 mark.

Eight was as close as the Lady Bison came to catching the Golden Suns at a 72-64 score at the 4:25 mark.

Tech maintained the lead and finished the game a free throw by Mary Crow for a 12-point finish.

Pounds had 25 points, Adams had 20 points, Myers-Sanders had 13 points and Hayden had 12 points.
