Beams rise on new Brown Building

SAM HOISINGTON/THE ARKA TECH: Progress continues on Tech’s newest construction project, a student services, administration, and academic building.

Beams have gone up on the newest addition to campus, and construction is right on schedule. The Dr. Robert Charles Brown and Jill Lestage Brown Building, located across the street from Rothwell, is scheduled to open for the Spring 2016 semester.

The building is being built in response to Arkansas Tech University’s growing enrollment. Tech enrollment exceeded 12,000 for the first time this semester.

The three-story building will house various student services and administration functions as well as approximately 12 academic classrooms.

Departments expected to be moved to the Brown Building upon completion include departments from several locations across campus. The departments of admissions, financial aid, registrar, student accounts and several administrative departments are scheduled to move into the Brown Building upon opening.

Academic space is expected to be occupied by a wide variety of courses.

The Dr. Robert Charles Brown and Jill Lestage Brown Endowment was established in conjunction with the construction of the Brown Building. The endowment was established in order to increase services and foster innovation within the student services departments that will be relocated to the Brown Building. Large donations to the endowment result in naming opportunities. Naming opportunities still currently exist for the building, ranging from $15,000 to name a seminar room to $200,000 for the privilege of naming an office suite, according to Jayne Jones, vice president for development. Several sizable donations have already been made.
