Art gallery features new exhibitions

ASHLEY PEARSON/THE ARKA TECH: Aaron Calvert’s ceramic work is currently on display at the Norman Art Gallery.

Ceramic mugs of poodles and people — among a host of other artifacts — are on display this month in the Norman Art Gallery.

The art gallery had three exhibitions last semester and is planning to have four more this semester. Currently in the fourth exhibition is a collection of ceramic works by artist Aaron Calvert called “Double Stepping with Kirk.”

Calvert is the director of Russell Fine Arts at Henderson State University. The display opened Feb. 2 and will end Feb. 25 with a closing reception and gallery talk at 2:30 p.m. with Calvert.

From March 2 to March 20, the gallery will display Liz Chrisman’s work in print. Chrisman will open the exhibition with a talk on March 2.

The last display is the Senior Art Exhibition which will take place in April. In November at the eighth annual Juried Student Competitive Exhibition, 71 students entered work and 30 students were accepted. Professional artists sometimes book two years in advanced for an exhibition.

Former student Faith Whittle said it was a challenge because different artists jury the student competition.

“It’s a little bit of a gamble when it comes to choosing which pieces to submit every year,” Whittle said.

Whittle had art in the gallery in from 2011-13, where she sold two pieces and received an honorable mention honor.

Hannah Richey, also a former student, also had artwork displayed in the senior showcase. Richey said her work didn’t make it into the showcase her first try.

“Our professors always told us that you can either be persistent and work harder or stop making art all together. I for one, couldn’t give up art or art competitions even if I wanted to,” Richey said.

The Norman Art Gallery is open 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m. during the weekdays. For more information, visit or Arkansas Tech-Norman Hall Art Gallery Facebook page.
